Joint LLB/MBA Program

UNB Law Joint LLB & MBA Program

The University of New Brunswick offers a Joint LLB/MBA (Bachelor of Laws and Master of Business Administration) Program which allows students to receive both degrees in four years. The Joint Degree Program is open to students who may not have a business degree, although students with a business degree may be given advanced standing towards meeting the MBA requirements.

For each academic year, students will be registered in either the LLB or MBA program and pay the usual tuition fees for that program. Students must attend a minimum of two years at the Law School and one year in the MBA program. Normally a student would complete the first year of each degree program. Then, for the final two years, the student would be registered in the LLB program and take a number of prescribed business-related law courses.

Admission to the Joint LLB/MBA Program

Applicants must apply and be accepted to each program separately. The eligibility requirements and selection procedures for an applicant intending to complete the Joint Degree Program are the same as for any applicant to the LLB or MBA degree program. While an undergraduate degree is normally required for admission to the MBA program, completion of the first year of the LLB program coupled with three years of post secondary education may be considered equivalent to an undergraduate degree for purposes of admission.

Acceptance to the Joint Degree Program may occur in three situations as described below. However, since a student must complete a number of prescribed course while in the Joint Degree Program, normally a student would complete the first year of each degree program. For the final two years, a student would then be registered in the LLB program and take a number of prescribed business related law courses.

  1. An applicant may be accepted for admission to each degree program simultaneously. Where an applicant applies for admission to both degree programs simultaneously and is accepted to both, the applicant must advise the Program Supervisor of his or her intention to enrol in and to complete the Joint Degree Program. The applicant must also indicate which degree program will be undertaken first. Where the applicant intends to register in the MBA program first, the offer of admission to law school will normally be deferred. Such a deferral would be for one year only. Where an applicant is accepted to law school after July 15, the applicant may be required to register in the LLB program first.

  2. A student who has successfully completed the first year of the MBA program may be accepted for admission to the LLB program. A student who is registered in or has completed the first year of the MBA program may apply for admission to the LLB program. If the student is accepted for admission to the LLB program, the student must advise the Program Supervisor of his or her intention to complete the Joint Degree Program.

  3. A student who has successfully completed any year of the LLB program may be accepted for admission to the MBA program. Upon acceptance the student must advise the Program Supervisor of his or her intention to complete the Joint Degree Program. Students who have completed their second or third year of the LLB program prior to admission to the Joint Degree Program may be required to take additional courses to meet the MBA degree requirements.
